Downloadable Audiobooks and Overdrive

It’s time to take a quick look around Overdrive.

Overdrive is a service available to you and all BPL patrons through a library subscription.  It allows users with valid BPL cards to search for audio books and music online and "check out" these items by downloading them to their own computers.  Once the items are on those computers, they can then transfer them to a portable listening device (that is, an MP3 player) and sometimes even burn them to CD.

For this lesson, you merely need to familiarize yourself a bit with the structure of Overdrive's BPL site and get an idea of the types of titles you can find here.  Take a look around and locate a few titles of interest.  If you don't have one already, an MP3 player is probably right around the corner and once you have it, you’ll definitely have a reason to try out this popular library service.  If you don't want to buy your own player but want to give this a try, the library owns a player just for staff.  Just send an email to Eladia Rivera to check one out!

Discovery Resources

Introduction to Overdrive- this QuickStart guide will fill you in on how Overdrive works and how to get started.

Discovery Exercise

  1. Go to Overdrive and explore book and music titles.
  2. Create a blog post about your findings.  Did you locate a title that you might want to try out and download?
  3. OPTIONAL: Try downloading a title from Overdrive.  You don’t have to have a portable player to listen to audiobooks; you can also listen to them from a computer.  Note: you must do this portion of the exercise at home unless your computer at work already has the Overdrive Media Console installed (note that there are different versions of the console depending on what type of computer you have.

Tracking Your Progress

Congratulations!  You're now done with the eighth BPL 2.0 exercise!  Don't forget to email Terzah (beckert@bouldercolorado.gov) with the URL for the permanent link to your blog post about downloadable audiobooks.
